April is Donate Life Month: Save a life

Did you know the wait list for an organ transplant grows by one person every eight minutes? Donate Life Month in April helps increase awareness of the ongoing need for organ donors, which impacts more than 100,000 people nationwide awaiting a transplant. Yale New Haven Transplantation Center performs liver and kidney transplants with organs from living or deceased donors; living donor recipients have better outcomes. Liver donors donate a portion of their liver; the remaining lobe of the donor’s liver regenerates fully. Kidney donors donate a full kidney.

As of early March, the transplant wait list at Yale New Haven Transplantation Center was 644 for kidney transplant and 86 for liver transplant; nationwide, the wait list, according to The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, was 94,432 for kidney transplant and 8,831 for liver transplant . Heart transplants are performed through the Yale New Haven Health Heart and Vascular Center; the Connecticut heart candidate wait list was nearly 40 in early March.
