Safety Matters – tips for staff during regulatory surveys

With surveyors from The Joint Commission expected to visit soon, staff should be ready to be interviewed. Staff interviews demonstrate competency, appropriate training and compliance in meeting regulatory standards.

Other tips for interactions with surveyors:

  • Always wear your ID badge.
  • Follow YNHHS’ Standards of Professional Behavior.
  • Ensure a scribe or escort is with you while talking with surveyor(s).
  • Know how to locate policy and procedure manuals on the employee intranet.
  • Navigate medical records discreetly (use “hide all” function in flowsheets and select only the sections in question).
  • Ensure your patients are covered while working with a surveyor.
  • Do not give surveyors anything to walk away with (Accreditation and Regulatory Affairs will provide any requested material).
