Greenwich, Yale New Haven hospitals earn Magnet redesignation

Nurses, staff and leaders burst into cheers upon learning that Greenwich Hospital
It’s a three-peat! Nurses, staff and leaders burst into cheers upon learning that Greenwich Hospital had earned its third Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

There was a whole lot of cheering in southern Connecticut last month, as leaders and staff with Greenwich and Yale New Haven hospitals learned they had earned prestigious Magnet redesignation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Greenwich Hospital celebrated its third Magnet recognition and YNHH its fourth. The ANCC announced the redesignations during Zoom calls – on Feb. 18 at YNHH and Feb. 19 at Greenwich Hospital.

These redesignations, along with Bridgeport Hospital’s first Magnet designation in November, place the three Yale New Haven Health hospitals among approximately 10 percent of hospitals nationwide – and only seven in Connecticut – to achieve this distinguished honor.

“The designations represent major milestones for our health system,” said Ena Williams, RN, PhD, YNHHS chief nurse executive. “They showcase the culture of excellence that defines Yale New Haven Health, where we support the autonomous practice, recruitment and retention of exceptional nurses, elevate the care we deliver and drive improvements in quality and safety for the communities we proudly serve.”

Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and the highest honor for nursing excellence any hospital can achieve. Magnet Recognition Program appraisers closely examine four areas of a hospital’s nursing operation and development: nursing leaders and how they empower nursing staff; culture of safety; quality of nursing practice; and the best practices nurses discover and share to deliver safe patient care.

“Magnet is never given; it is earned. Earning it four times reflects a level of excellence that isn’t episodic, it is who you are at your core,” said Courtney Vose, RN, DNP, YNHH chief nursing officer. “Our nurses lead with love, with purpose and with a deep sense of accountability that elevates the care we deliver across our hospital.”

“Magnet is truly a recognition of what we already know our nurses are doing day in and day out,” said Katherine Heilpern, MD, YNHH president. “Their dedication, their expertise and their unwavering commitment to our patients define the very best of who we are as a hospital.”

“This accomplishment reflects the outstanding teamwork, perseverance and clinical skill our nurses and care teams demonstrate every single day,” said Anna Cerra, RN, DNP, Greenwich Hospital chief nursing officer. “We are extremely proud to be among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for their commitment to nursing excellence.”

“Remarkable dedication and professionalism are what define Greenwich Hospital, and this third designation from Magnet proves just that,” said Bob Blenderman, PA, president. “This recognition is grounded in the shared belief in our entire hospital, yet it is our nurses, guided by their leadership and innovation, who truly drive our Magnet journey forward.”
