Yale New Haven Health medical plan members now have access to the Helix Genomic Advantage program, which provides high-quality, guideline-supported genetic tests. These tests, which are free to medical plan members, can be used to identify potential health conditions that might affect you and your family, inform diagnosis and guide treatment decisions.
The Helix Genomic Advantage allows you and your doctors to:
- Identify potential health risks before symptoms appear. These include genetic variations associated with increased risk for certain cancers, like breast or colorectal, and inherited heart conditions that might affect you or your family.
- Help your doctor personalize care based on your genetic profile
- Understand how your body may respond to certain medications
- Create a genetic resource that can provide insights now and in the future without repeated testing
How the Program Works
- Talk to your doctor about whether specific genetic testing is right for you. Your doctor can order testing directly – no specialist referral is required. Helix and YNHHS will inform doctors about the program and how to order a test.
- If your doctor determines genetic testing is medically appropriate, they will order the test through our Helix partnership. There’s no paperwork for you to complete.
- Complete a simple saliva or blood sample at your doctor’s office or with a kit mailed to your home.
- Your test results will be sent directly to your doctor, typically within two to three weeks of providing your sample.
- Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to review your results and discuss any recommended next steps. Based on your results, your doctor may recommend preventive screenings, genetic counseling, lifestyle changes or other personalized care options.
This evidence-based program will improve the quality of genetic testing available for YNHHS medical plan members and provide additional support resources to our clinicians.
