Maybe you’ve known someone at work or home or among your friends who has had suicidal thoughts. Do you know what to do or say to help that person?
All Yale New Haven Health employees are invited to take a free, evidence-based suicide prevention training program on QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) offered by Employee and Family Resources (EFR). Like CPR, QPR is a simple process anyone can learn to help save the life of someone in crisis. The 90-minute class will teach participants how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and:
“Most people don’t know how to help someone who may be considering suicide. This class provides facts and dispels myths about suicide,” said George “Bud” Wassell, EFR coordinator. “You will learn how to recognize someone who may be at risk, along with simple, practical ways to talk to them and get them the help they need.”

YNHHS has offered the QPR class for over a year, and the response has been “overwhelmingly positive,” Wassell said. “The more people we train, the more people we can potentially save.”
