Attending the ERCC training graduation in June were (l-r): Laurie Gattinella, RN, medicine services coordinator; Scott Sussman, MD, physician executive director, YNHH Office of the Chief Medical Officer, and assistant clinical professor, Yale School of Medicine; Kelli Brown, RN, assistant patient services manager, Yale New Haven Hospital Adult Emergency Department; Abigail Horner, volunteer program coordinator, Westerly Hospital; Fadeke Uguru, RN, assistant patient services manager, YNHH Medicine (SLA 5 and Main 5); Christine VanVliet, RN, nursing education manager, YNHHS Center for Nursing Excellence; Melissa Gambaccini, APRN, nurse practitioner, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Hospital Breast Center; Stephanie Barrett, RN, nursing education manager, YNHHS Center for Nursing Excellence; and Jasmine Carter, system project lead, YNHHS Patient Experience.

Many healthcare professionals will tell you they never stop learning, and that ongoing education and training are necessary to stay on top of the latest treatments, technology and trends.

On June 2, eight Yale New Haven Health leaders completed what you might call “extra credit” – voluntary training in Enhancing Relationship-Centered Communication (ERCC). They are now ERCC facilitators, helping colleagues throughout the health system communicate in ways designed to improve patient outcomes, the patient experience and clinician satisfaction.

ERCC training focuses on developing connections and building relationships with patients and family members, along with other patient care team members. The training also aims to help medical professionals communicate diagnoses and treatment information in ways patients and families can understand.

YNHHS and Yale Medicine have been working with the Academy of Communication in Healthcare to offer ERCC training since 2018. The 4.5-hour training is recommended for physicians, nurses and advanced practice providers. Other licensed and non-licensed professionals can also participate if their managers feel it would be beneficial.

Anyone interested in taking ERCC training can sign up on LMS. Those who want to become an ERCC facilitator should email [email protected].
