YNHHS to pilot system allowing employees to choose open shifts online

In November, Yale New Haven Health System will pilot the ShiftSelect Open Shift Management system for nurses on selected units at Bridgeport, Greenwich and Yale New Haven hospitals.

ShiftSelect is a cloud-based application that will allow an employee to review his or her core schedule and request extra shifts online. Phase I of the program will include nursing pools and heart and vascular, intensive care, medicine and some surgical units and the Emergency Department at YNHH’s Saint Raphael Campus. Details about staff enrollment will be provided by the managers of units participating in the pilot program in early fall.

ShiftSelect will replace the current method of managing open shifts, which often involves paper charts and phone calls to employees from schedulers trying to fill open shifts. The new system will provide staff:

  • 24/7 access from any computer with internet availability
  • Personal and unit schedules posted online
  • The ability to view and request open/extra shifts on units where the employee is qualified to work
  • Choice and flexibility with extra shifts

ShiftSelect will initially be available to nursing staff on the pilot program units; plans are to eventually expand it to all units at Bridgeport, Greenwich and Yale- New Haven hospitals. The system will also be used for other departments in the future.

In addition to enhancing efficiency and flexibility for employees, ShiftSelect provides more visibility for open shifts and aligns with the health system’s continuing cost and value efforts.
