Durrell McNeal; Danielle Struble, RN

These employees recently received PEACE (Patient Experience Awards for Caring and Excellence) for going above and beyond to meet the needs of patients and families.

York Street Campus

Durrell McNeal, environmental services associate, was honored for exemplifying the standards of professional behavior at the highest levels during a difficult interaction with a patient’s family member. While McNeal was cleaning the patient’s room, the family member confronted him and began behaving disruptively, including using racist terms. McNeal reported the incident to the charge nurse and requested assistance from his supervisor. As the family member continued to berate McNeal, the patient’s physician and off-shift clinical executive were also called to intervene and de-escalate the situation. Throughout the entire encounter, McNeal maintained a calm demeanor, patience and professionalism, which kept the situation from becoming even worse.

Saint Raphael Campus

Danielle Struble, RN, assistant patient service manager, Emergency Department, was recognized for displaying genuine compassion and going above and beyond for a 12-year-old patient who came to the ED with probable symptoms of type 1 diabetes. Recognizing the fear, confusion and sadness that such a life-changing diagnosis meant to the patient and her mother, Struble sat with them and shared her own story about living with the disease. She patiently answered their many questions, which went a long way toward calming their fears and preparing the young girl for her hospital admission and future challenges.

All employees, physicians and volunteers are eligible for the monthly PEACE recognition. Send nominations to [email protected].
