YNHH announces PIP Q1 results

Performance Incentive Plan (PIP) results through the first quarter of fiscal year 2019, which ended Dec. 31, met goals in some areas and indicate opportunities for improvement in others.

PIP results are measured in four hospital-wide performance areas: patient safety and quality, patient experience, employee engagement and financial performance. Each category receives equal weight of 25 percent.

Patient safety and quality includes two measures. C. difficile infection measures the number of patients who contracted the Clostridium difficile bacterial infection during their hospital stays. Results for the first quarter met the threshold result level.

COPD readmissions, a new measure to the PIP program this year, measures the number of patients readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of being discharged for complications related to their treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Results for this measure exceeded the maximum goal performance.

Patient experience measures patients’ and families’ experiences at YNHH as expressed in Press Ganey surveys and includes three measures.

Inpatient satisfaction rates the satisfaction of inpatients from adult units on both New Haven campuses and patients on the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital campuses; Emergency Department measures the satisfaction of patients who visited the York Street Adult and Pediatric, Saint Raphael Campus or Shoreline Medical Center emergency departments; and Ambulatory Services rates the overall experience in Ambulatory Surgery, Heart and Vascular outpatient centers, Radiology and Outpatient Oncology. Results for each of the patient experience measures did not meet threshold levels for the first quarter.

Employee engagement includes employee participation in two initiatives. The Know Your Numbers Plus employee wellness program helps employees heighten their health awareness and earn credit toward the cost of their medical benefits. The employee injuries reporting measure tracks the number of initial injury reports entered by employees. Results for both of these measures will be available later in the year.

Financial performance includes the sole measure of the hospital’s operating margin. For the first quarter of 2019, the hospital’s net operating margin exceeded the threshold level of achievement.
