Throwback Thursday: An Old-School OR

John M. Churchman, MD, attending surgeon, (standing, eighth from left) leads an operation in the Farnam Operating Amphitheater of the New Haven Hospital, c. 1915. According to the hospital’s 1915 Annual Report, 2,316 surgeries were performed that year, the most common for adenoids and tonsils, appendicitis, fractures, hernias and wounds. Some of the nurses and medical residents identified in the photograph are Edith Caterson, Edith Elizabeth DeFreest, W.H. Olds, Jr., Isao Hirata, Dorothy Dougherty and Eleanor H. Daly.
