Bridgeport Hospital serves patients from Fairfield and New Haven counties at its two campuses in Bridgeport and Milford.
It’s home to the Connecticut Burn Center – the state’s only burn center, and houses Connecticut’s only multi-person Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber.
In 2023, the hospital unveiled the Siemens Healthineers ARTIS Icono, the most advanced biplane neuro-angiography imaging system in the Elizabeth M. Pfriem Neurovascular and Interventional Radiology Center. The biplane provides intraoperative views from multiple angles to help surgeons remove blood clots up to 24 hours after the onset of a stroke.
The Milford Campus recently opened 3 East, a state-of-the-art post-surgical orthopedic care unit. Each room has a tablet allowing patients to communicate with their care team and control lighting, temperature, entertainment and other functions. Patients can be monitored remotely and will be able consult with providers virtually in the future.
Opened in 1884, Bridgeport Hospital was the first hospital in Fairfield County and the third in Connecticut. It started when Dr. George Lewis returned from the Civil War and persuaded his aunt, Susan Hubbell, to bequeath $13,500 and an acre at the top of Mill Hill for a hospital.
P.T. Barnum, the showman and namesake of Barnum & Bailey’s circus fame, was the first president of the hospital’s board of directors.
