From One Mother to Another

A message from the president of Greenwich Hospital

As the mother of three children, I speak from the heart when I say that pregnancy can be one of the most exhilarating times in a woman’s life. It can also, however, be among the most challenging.

Fortunately, most pregnancies and deliveries go smoothly, and we are proud that so many women choose Greenwich Hospital to support them during this extraordinary time in their lives.

We recognize, though, that childbirth continues to come with the possibility of complications. In response, Greenwich Hospital is taking proactive steps to address these concerns, including strengthening our Maternal Fetal Medicine services. Our Yale Medicine maternal fetal medicine physicians play an integral role in keeping pregnant women who are at risk for complications healthy, while ensuring that their babies safely grow and mature until delivery. They also provide preconception consultations to identify potential problems and maximize a woman’s health before pregnancy.

We are also working to expand our options to maternal care by welcoming doulas so women have the support they need during labor and delivery. We also established standard protocols to address certain medical conditions, such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, to ensure that every pregnant woman receives appropriate care.

As with all of our services, we are moving to be more intentional to ensure all care is provided in a manner that takes into account healthcare disparities and eliminates barriers to care. Our goal is to provide women and their families with an exceptional birthing experience, regardless of their race or ethnicity.

Diane P. Kelly, President
