When it comes to taking care of women in his obstetrical and gynecologic practice, Leonard H. Zamore, MD, knows that providing guidance is one of his most important jobs.

“Guidelines about women’s health care can get confusing because things change so rapidly,” says Dr. Zamore, who has been a clinician at Yale for more than 30 years. “There is a lot to keep up with. Pap smears have changed. Mammography is different. I educate myself. I go to conferences. I read the literature, and then I try to impart that knowledge to my patients.”

Dr. Zamore, who sees patients in a private practice office with several locations and at Yale New Haven Health’s Women’s Center, offers preventive care, treatment and follow-up support for women navigating menopause, birth control, infertility issues and other problems. He also performs laparoscopic and advanced surgery.

“I make sure to listen to my patients, which I enjoy. I try to calm their fears, and if there is an issue I feel I’m not capable of handling to the best degree, I will send them to our maternal-fetal specialists. Or if they have genetic problems, I will refer them to geneticists,” he says.

A benefit of his private practice, he says, is that there are only two physicians. “This way, we try to have women see the same physician throughout the entire pregnancy,” he says. “I did not join a big practice specifically because I think that women need to have a one-on-one relationship, which feels more comfortable than being shuttled around. Spending nine months taking care of the same person and really knowing them is a big help.”
