Yale New Haven Hospital celebrates 750th liver transplant

YNHH recently completed its 750th liver transplant
YNHH recently completed its 750th liver transplant. Since performing its first transplant in 1983, the Yale New Haven Transplantation Center has ranked among the nation’s best, achieving survival rates that exceed national averages, including a 100 percent one-year patient survival rate.

Yale New Haven Hospital recently completed its 750th liver transplant, marking a major milestone in its mission to deliver lifesaving care.

“This achievement is a testament to our team’s expertise and unwavering commitment to patient care,” said Hiroshi Sogawa, MD, surgical director of Liver Transplantation, YNHH, and professor of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine (YSM). “Every transplant represents a life saved and a family restored. We are proud to offer advanced techniques and compassionate care that make these outcomes possible.”

Nearly 106,000 people in the United States are awaiting an organ transplant. In 2024, 16,988 deceased donors and 7,030 living donors gave the gift of life, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. YNHH’s Center for Living Organ Donors provides optimal donor care and support throughout the evaluation, donation and recovery process. To learn more, visit ynhh.org and search “living organ donor” or call 866-925-3897.

Liver transplantation is often the only option for patients with end-stage liver disease or acute liver failure. YNHH’s program is recognized nationally for its expertise in complex cases and its commitment to research and education. The program offers advanced techniques such as hypothermia therapy for acute liver failure, as well as split, reduced and mono-segment liver transplantation, in which part of a donor’s liver is used.

“Our program’s success is built on collaboration and innovation,” said Joohyun Kim, MD, PhD, transplant surgeon, Yale New Haven Health, and associate professor, Transplant Surgery, YSM. “From living-donor transplants to cutting-edge treatments, we strive to set the standard for excellence in liver transplantation.”
