Jeremy I. Schwartz, MD, cares for patients with general medical conditions requiring hospitalization, including such problems as acute pain, alcohol withdrawal syndrome and pneumonia.
An assistant professor of medicine (general medicine) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Schwartz has also worked for many years as a clinician and researcher in East Africa, primarily at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. “My focus on studying quality of care delivery has been informed directly by my experience as a frontline clinician [in the United States and Africa],” he says, “It has made me appreciate all that we are able to do for our patients here at home, since so much less is possible elsewhere in the world. It also makes me conscious of doing excessive unnecessary tests.”
In addition to his own clinical practice, Dr. Schwartz works with medical residents and colleagues to continually improve care for patients in the hospital. “Currently at Yale New Haven Hospital, our team is piloting an innovative model for interdisciplinary rounding at the patient's bedside. I am truly excited to implement this model and hope that it helps us improve the quality of our communication with patients and their families,” he says.
