Biography - Evangelos K. Oikonomou, MD, DPhil, PhD

Evangelos K. Oikonomou, MD, DPhil, is a cardiovascular medicine specialist who focuses on the diagnosis and management of heart and blood vessel diseases. He provides advanced care for a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, using both state-of-the-art imaging techniques and data-driven approaches to personalize patient assessment and treatment.

“I strive to build long-term relationships with my patients and emphasize the prevention of cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Oikonomou says. “I believe every patient is unique. In my practice, I listen carefully and work collaboratively to develop personalized treatment plans grounded in the best available evidence. Helping individuals take proactive steps to preserve their heart health is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.”

As a clinical fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Oikonomou’s research bridges medicine and data science with the goal of enhancing how heart disease is detected and managed. He develops artificial intelligence tools that help identify heart disease patterns from imaging tests such as echocardiograms and cardiac CT scans. These methods improve the detection of both common and rare cardiac conditions and support more accurate risk assessment. Dr. Oikonomou also investigates how inflammation in the tissues surrounding blood vessels affects heart health and works to create tools that guide more tailored treatments for patients. His research includes the use of computer vision and machine learning methods to find personalized responses to therapies, which can make clinical trials more efficient and patient care more precise.

Dr. Oikonomou is widely published in top journals and has received notable awards from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology and American Society for Clinical Investigation, as well as the Radcliffe Department of Medicine Graduate Prize from the University of Oxford. “Cardiology brings together a unique blend of acute and chronic care, across all ages and disease spectrums,” Dr. Oikonomou says. “I was drawn to the intellectual rigor of integrating history, physical examination, and imaging diagnostics to make precise diagnoses, and to a field that continuously evolves through impactful clinical trials and innovation.”

He received his medical degree from the University of Athens Medical School in Greece, completed doctoral studies in medical sciences at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and his residency, as well as clinical and post-doctoral research fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Yale School of Medicine.
