1993: YNHH opened Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, the first comprehensive children’s hospital in Connecticut.
1992: The hospital was first in the state to use ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), life-saving technology that supports an infant’s heart and/or lungs when they are unable to function adequately.
2008: Under the direction of Joseph Schindler, MD, YNHH launched Connecticut’s first Telestroke Program with Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. The program facilitated rapid assessment and treatment of acute stroke symptoms, allowing many patients to remain in their local hospital. Telestroke was a precursor to future uses of telemedicine.
