YNHH and Greenwich Hospital earn Five-Star ratings from CMS

5 Star Rating

Yale New Haven Hospital and Greenwich Hospital have both earned a prestigious five-star overall hospital quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The recognition places YNHH and Greenwich Hospital among a select group of hospitals nationwide to receive the highest distinction for patient safety and quality of care.

The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating is based on performance across several key categories, including safety of care, mortality, readmissions, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Fewer than 15 percent of hospitals nationwide achieve the five-star distinction.

Yale New Haven Hospital's five-star CMS rating further builds on a strong record of excellence in safety, quality, education and research. This spring, the hospital earned an “A" grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group and also achieved its fourth Magnet® designation, the highest national recognition for nursing excellence.

“For an academic medical center of Yale New Haven Hospital's size and complexity, achieving a five-star CMS rating is exceptionally rare," said Katherine Heilpern, MD, president of Yale New Haven Hospital. “This distinction reflects not only rigorous performance across a broad range of quality and safety measures, but also the deep, sustained commitment to our patients by our entire team of physicians, nurses and staff. It is a powerful affirmation of the culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement that we bring to work every day."

Greenwich Hospital, which also earned an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to communities throughout lower Fairfield County and nearby New York, serving as a trusted healthcare destination for patients across state lines.

“This achievement is the result of true collaboration and teamwork,” said Bob Blenderman, PA, president of Greenwich Hospital. “From our frontline caregivers to our support teams, everyone plays a role in meeting the highest standards for safety, quality and compassionate patient experience. I am proud of our staff and grateful for the shared commitment that makes this level of care possible for our patients and community."

Achieving a five-star rating requires sustained excellence across dozens of quality measures and reflects years of coordinated efforts to strengthen patient safety, clinical outcomes, and the overall patient experience.

CMS, a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, administers the nation's major healthcare programs and publishes hospital quality ratings to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care.
