Yale New Haven Hospital

Program brings interdisciplinary training to (simulated) life

Ambulance on the shoreline

Emergencies require quick, coordinated responses – physicians and staff from many different roles working together when minutes count.

The Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation and Yale New Haven Hospital’s Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford are supporting a collaborative simulation program that mirrors these kinds of scenarios, strengthening clinical excellence across all disciplines by training healthcare team members together.

The program, composed of physicians, nurses, clinical technicians and critical care transport paramedics, creates a shared learning environment in which participants build a deeper understanding of their roles, communication styles and decision-making processes – all of which translate into safer, more coordinated patient care.

Simulation has become essential to the Shoreline ED’s professional development, providing opportunities to practice complex scenarios, refine critical thinking and rehearse lifesaving interventions without risk to patients. Whether navigating a high-acuity trauma, managing a deteriorating medical patient or troubleshooting equipment challenges, participants can learn in a supportive and structured setting.

These sessions also foster a culture of innovation and psychological safety. Staff are encouraged to ask questions, test new approaches and reflect on their performance.

By investing in simulation, the Shoreline Medical Center ensures its emergency team remains prepared and adaptable in its mission to deliver exceptional care to the community.
