Adams Neurosciences Center construction substantially complete; work continues to prepare for patients

On Aug. 31, 2022, 13 people dipped ceremonial shovels into a pile of dirt in a parking lot at Yale New Haven Hospital’s Saint Raphael Campus.

This month, the monumental construction project that transformed that pile of dirt into the Adams Neurosciences Center (ANC) is substantially complete.

“Substantial completion marks an important transition – from building the Adams Neurosciences Center to preparing it to deliver on its promise for patients, families and our teams,” said Pamela Scagliarini, senior vice president, Administration, Adams Neurosciences Center. “Our focus now is on a safe and coordinated activation that ensures full readiness to care for patients. We are grateful to Turner Construction, Yale School of Medicine and the many leaders across Yale New Haven Health System whose collaboration and dedication have brought us to this point.”

There’s still much more to be done before the ANC opens to patients on Feb. 27, 2027.

With construction nearly complete, the project is entering the activation phase, the critical period that transforms a newly constructed building into a fully functioning healthcare environment. This work includes the installation and commissioning of clinical equipment, furniture, artwork and digital technology solutions; staff training on new technologies and workflows; regulatory and safety readiness activities; and countless other efforts to ensure the facility is prepared to deliver safe, high-quality patient care from day one.

At the same time, operational readiness planning continues with the development of new workflows, staff orientation and training in new care environments with new equipment and operational processes; simulations to validate readiness; and numerous other activities to support a safe, seamless move into the ANC.

The simulations include a mock patient move scheduled for Nov. 4 that will help staff and emergency medical services personnel fine-tune plans to move patients to the ANC from other areas of the Saint Raphael and York Street campuses.

On Jan. 6 and Feb. 3, 2027, ANC staff will participate in “Day In The Life” events that simulate the patient journey from arrival through care delivery, transitions and discharge. These events are designed to identify issues that need to be resolved before the ANC opens to patients.

Of course, celebrations are also part of the ANC planning, including a special event for YNHH employees Nov. 17, followed by a ribbon-cutting for project donors and YNHHS, state and local leaders. Watch for more details about the employee event and other ANC updates and activities. For more information on the project, visit Adams Neurosciences Center.
