On Sept. 8, Yale New Haven Hospital opened an Emergency Department Accelerated Care Unit (ACU) for patients whose testing and/or treatment can be completed in under 24 hours.
The 15-bed observation unit at the York Street Campus is staffed 24/7 by nurses and advanced practice providers, with an attending physician on site 9 am-5 pm.
The ACU will serve an estimated 6,000 patients a year and is designed to help free up beds in the main Adult ED and on inpatient units. If test results or short-term treatment in the ACU indicate that patients require additional care, they can return to the main ED or be admitted to an inpatient unit. With private bays, the ACU is also designed to enhance the patient experience.
