Bridgeport Hospital first in the state to earn national equity certification

Achievement Icon

Bridgeport Hospital is the first in Connecticut to earn The Joint Commission’s voluntary Excellent Health Outcomes for All Certification. The recognition acknowledges hospitals that are leading efforts to reduce healthcare disparities and improve outcomes through intentional, systemwide strategies.

Bridgeport Hospital’s achievement reflects ongoing work to strengthen equity in care delivery, enhance the patient experience and promote inclusive practices across the organization. The certification focuses on structures and processes necessary to advance health equity by:

  • Decreasing healthcare disparities across patient populations
  • Promoting diversity, equity and inclusion among staff
  • Strengthening leadership engagement and accountability
  • Improving collaboration across care teams and community partners
  • Enhancing data collection and use to identify and address gaps in care
  • Advancing equitable care delivery and continuous performance improvement

“This certification underscores our deep commitment to ensuring that every patient receives high-quality, equitable care,” said Anne Diamond, DBA, JD, Bridgeport Hospital president. “We continually work to identify and address disparities, strengthen trust in the communities we serve and create a care environment where every individual feels respected, understood and supported.”

Hospital efforts include developing culturally responsive care models, expanding access to services and leveraging data-driven insights to improve outcomes across diverse populations. The hospital supports vulnerable patients through high-touch care coordination programs and offers robust language access services. Social workers play a critical role in addressing complex social needs, while hospital leaders remain closely engaged in the patient complaint and grievance process to ensure concerns are addressed with transparency and accountability. In the Emergency Department, dedicated pediatric treatment areas feature specialized technology, customized environments and calming activities to meet children’s and families’ unique needs.

These and other initiatives reflect a multidisciplinary approach that integrates equity into clinical care, operations and organizational culture.
