Adams Neurosciences Center to feature four neurosurgical ORs

Among the Adams Neurosciences Center’s (ANC) many highlights will be four inpatient operating rooms equipped with high-tech features, an intraoperative MRI (ioMRI) and 14 Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays.

The ORs will be on the second floor of one tower and the PACU bays on the second floor of the other tower, both connected by a hallway. PACU bays will be used for pre-surgical procedures, including nerve blocks (regional anesthesia), as well as post-surgical procedures. The ORs, among YNHH’s largest, will be for neurosurgical procedures for patients coming from the Emergency Department; inpatient units from both campuses, including the ANC’s 28-bed Neuro ICU; and elective procedures requiring inpatient stay.

Construction of the four ORs and room to support ioMRI is scheduled to be completed in October. OR technology will include:

  • The ioMRI, offering real-time imaging during surgery. Currently, YNHHS is the only Connecticut health system with intraoperative MRI, located at Smilow Cancer Hospital at YNHH’s York Street Campus.
  • A biplane and control room for neurosurgical procedures like mechanical thrombectomy to treat ischemic stroke.
  • The ROSA ONE® Brain robotic navigation system, now at YSC and used for epilepsy-related procedures.

YNHH neurosurgery offerings include those related to cerebrovascular disorders such as arteriovenous malformation and stroke, along with epilepsy, normal pressure hydrocephalus, spinal disorders and movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor.

“My colleagues and I look forward to the opening of the Adams Neurosciences Center, which will bring the most advanced technology and treatment to our patients and community,” said Murat Gunel, MD, physician-in-chief, Neurosurgery, YNHHS; and Sterling professor of Neurosurgery and professor of Genetics and Neuroscience, Yale School of Medicine. “These state-of-the-art operating rooms will allow us to deliver more personalized, precise and comprehensive neurosurgical and neuroendovascular care for each patient, supported by the advanced technologies and multidisciplinary expertise of our faculty.”

The new ORs will also increase surgical capacity hospital-wide, noted Craig Odermatt, YNHH director of operations, Perioperative Services, as moving neurosurgical cases to the ANC will create additional availability on the YSC.
