Overview

Our cardiac surgeons perform the full spectrum of open-heart surgery for both adults and children.

Team members include experienced and award-winning Yale Medicine cardiac surgeons, skilled anesthesiologists, nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Our depth and breadth of experience allows us to perform a wide variety of complex operations, such as valve repairs, aortic aneurysm surgery, combined coronary and valve operation as well as reoperative heart surgery.

We offer advanced procedures including minimally invasive cardiac operations, off-pump coronary artery bypass, surgical ablation (maze procedure) for atrial fibrillation and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. We participate in numerous national clinical trials related to cardiac surgery. Patients can rest assured that they are receiving the most advanced treatment possible from among the most experienced surgeons in the country.

Areas of Expertise

Types of Cardiac Surgery & Treatments

Aneurysm

A multidisciplinary team including cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, cardiologists and radiologists offers the most advanced therapies for patients with aortic aneurysm disease. We provide care and treatment for abdominal, thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. Procedures offered include:

  • Aortic arch replacement
  • Aortic dissection and aortic root surgeries
  • Ascending aortic aneurysm repair
  • Descending and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Thoracic endovascular aortic repair
  • Valve-sparing root replacement (David procedure)

Cardiac tumor surgery

Heart tumors are rare. Our expert cardiac surgery team uses advanced technology to remove tumors with precision and safety. Many such tumors can be treated using the latest minimally invasive, endoscopic and robotic techniques.

Coronary artery bypass grafting  (CABG)

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most common operation to treat blocked coronary arteries (coronary artery disease), particularly when it affects multiple coronary arteries and in patients with diabetes.

Heart transplantation

Through our heart failure program, patients have access to full-spectrum life-saving heart care, ranging from the least-invasive drug therapies to advanced surgery, including transplant.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery

Our cardiac surgeons specialize in numerous minimally invasive heart surgery techniques that include small incisions to surgically treat cardiac disease.

Mitral Valve Surgery

Our cardiac surgeons perform complex mitral valve surgeries, with a strong emphasis on mitral valve repair. Our treatment plan is tailored to a patient’s needs.

Pulmonary artery embolism surgery

Yale New Haven Hospital is the only hospital in Connecticut that can perform a curative surgical procedure -- pulmonary thromboendarterectomy -- for adults with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a potential complication from a pulmonary embolism.

Treatment for atrial fibrillation

Sometimes treatment for atrial fibrillation includes cardiac ablation performed by an electrophysiologist and surgery performed by a cardiac surgeon. There are two types of procedures that include surgery to treat this arrhythmia.

Treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is caused by a thickening of the heart muscle, blocking blood flow to the body. In some people, the thickened heart muscle can cause shortness of breath, chest pain or problems in the heart’s electrical system, causing abnormal heart rhythms.

Valve repair and replacement

Our cardiac surgeons perform repairs and replacements on all cardiac heart valves. A multidisciplinary valve team of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists collaborates to offer the best available options for valve disease treatment, whether open heart surgery or transcatheter procedures.
