New Haven, CT (May 21, 2021) – Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has once again achieved the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), placing it among the approximately seven percent of the more than 5,600 hospitals nationwide – and one of only seven in Connecticut – to achieve this distinguished honor.
Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor when the public evaluates health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. The designation is the highest honor for nursing excellence that any hospital can achieve. The Magnet Recognition Program also recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care and innovations in professional practice. Magnet appraisers look closely at four areas of nursing operation and development, the hospital's nursing leaders and how they empower nursing staff; the hospital's culture of safety; the quality of nursing practice; and the best practices nurses discover and share to deliver safe patient care.
“We are thrilled that the American Nurses Credentialing Center has re-designated Yale New Haven Hospital as a Magnet Hospital for the third time,” said Ena Williams, senior vice president and chief nursing officer, Yale New Haven Hospital “This important re-designation celebrates the collaboration between nurses and members of the healthcare team to achieve excellent outcomes in patient care. This re-designation is particularly special considering all that our nurses and team has experienced this past year.”
“Yale New Haven Hospital’s Magnet re-designation is a testament to the amazing nurses at our hospital,” said Keith Churchwell, MD, president, Yale New Haven Hospital. “While Magnet is a reflection of the excellence of the entire hospital, it’s really the nurses who make this happen. This designation recognizes exceptional patient care and evidence-based nursing practices through quality improvements as well as interdisciplinary collaboration.”
The Magnet Model provides a framework for nursing practice, research and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization’s nursing excellence. To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
“We are so incredibly proud of each member of the YNHH team and their contributions to the Magnet re-designation document and site visit, “said Danielle Huseman-Maratea, Magnet integration manager, Office of Nursing Excellence at YNHH. “This designation represents the organizations ongoing commitment to achieving excellence. ANCC is the world's largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization and a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. YNHH received the Magnet designation for the first time in 2012 and is the largest hospital in Connecticut to achieve Magnet status.
