Lawrence + Memorial Hospital awarded Advanced Primary Stroke Center recertification from The Joint Commission

Thursday, May 9, 2024

New London, CT (May 9, 2024) – Lawrence + Memorial Hospital (L+M) has been re-certified by The Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center for the ninth time.

Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes L+M’s commitment in making exceptional efforts to foster better patient outcomes. It signifies that the quality of care the hospital provides meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of serious disability in the United States. Access to specialized stroke care is critical to reduce the overall physical and psychological burdens of stroke. Primary Stroke Center Certification is given to hospitals that provide emergency stroke care, evaluation for acute stroke treatments, processes to reduce the risk of additional strokes and recovery services. L+M’s stroke team has demonstrated its commitment to improving the quality of care it delivers through compliance with quality measures, continuous process improvement and ongoing data collection.

“The stroke team at L+M is proud of the role they play in ensuring patients admitted with stroke receive the greatest of care and follow-up,” said Richard Lisitano, president, L+M Hospital. “Delivering high-quality health treatment for our patients is our number one priority.”

The Stroke Center at L+M uses a comprehensive approach emphasizing rapid evaluation and treatment of stroke as well as patient education toward improving the outcome and quality of life for stroke patients. This approach includes care provided by L+M staff working with Yale New Haven Hospital’s TeleStroke program. A Yale New Haven neurologist provides remote neurologic expertise when L+M patients present with acute stroke symptoms and are deemed eligible for intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a clot-busting drug or interventional procedures.
