New London, CT (January 18, 2017) – Oliver Mayorga, MD, has been named the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for L+M Healthcare, which includes Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Westerly Hospital.
Dr. Mayorga, who is currently Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Westerly Hospital and Pequot Health Center, succeeds Dr. Dan Rissi, who retired in December 2016. Dr. Mayorga has overseen emergency medicine since his arrival at L+M in 2009.
"Dr. Mayorga's training, experience, enthusiasm and hard-working, hands-on approach, as well as his connections to both hospital medical staffs, make him the right choice to lead the next chapter for L+M and Westerly Hospitals," said Bruce D. Cummings, president and chief executive officer. "Dr. Mayorga was selected from a highly qualified pool of internal candidates, assuring that the new CMO would have an established connection in our local communities."
"I am ready for this new challenge," said Dr. Mayorga, who will report to Thomas Balcezak, MD, the chief medical officer for Yale New Haven Health. "This is an exciting time at our hospitals. Our new affiliation opens the doors for so many possibilities, all of which will improve the care we provide to our patients."
"A major goal for Dr. Mayorga, in addition to historic opportunities, will be to provide support and guide a smooth integration with Yale New Haven Health," said Dr. Balcezak. "I am pleased with this appointment and look forward to working closely with Dr. Mayorga not just throughout the integration process, but beyond."
Dr. Mayorga is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He did an internship at Greenwich Hospital and his residency at Jacobi/Montefiore. Recently, Dr. Mayorga received a master's degree in Healthcare Management from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Mayorga is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served both in Iraq and in Biloxi, MS, helping to restore medical services after Hurricane Katrina.
