Greenwich Hospital recognized as stroke care leader amid challenging pandemic

Friday, October 1, 2021

Greenwich, CT (Oct. 1, 2021) – Greenwich Hospital’s high-quality stroke program has been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for providing up-to-the-minute scientifically based treatment to support better patient outcomes, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.

The Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, Target: Stroke Elite Award and Target: Diabetes Honor Roll Award represent the exceptional care patients with stroke and diabetes receive at Greenwich Hospital. The recognition is based on data from 2020, a particularly challenging year due to COVID-19, which can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke among some patients. People with diabetes also are at high risk of complications if they contract COVID-19.

“These awards are a true testament to the level of commitment to care for individuals who have experienced a stroke as well as those with stroke and diabetes,” said Diane Kelly, Greenwich Hospital president. “We implement evidence-based clinical guidelines aimed at reducing future stroke occurrence to help patients live longer, healthier lives.”

A stroke occurs when a clot or a rupture prevents blood flow to the brain. Stroke is the nation’s fifth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, which estimates that someone dies of a stroke every 40 seconds. Speedy stroke treatment is key to lowering the risk of serious complications and possibly death.

Get With The Guidelines® is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program that provides hospitals with tools and resources to diagnose and treat stroke patients. The Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award is a newer award recognizing hospitals that meet quality measures for 12 consecutive months. More than 34 million Americans have diabetes.
