Bridgeport, CT – Nearly 600 people took part in the 12th annual Bridgeport Hospital Home Run 5K run, walk and children’s fun run May 24. A benefit for the hospital’s Joel E. Smilow Heart Institute, the event raised nearly $27,000. AMR, the regional ambulance company, was the presenting sponsor.
“Phenomenal weather, a great turnout, tremendous support from our sponsors, our team of volunteers and the community – it’s hard to ask for more,” said Steve Jakab, president of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation, which organized the event with race director Marty Schaivone.
The Home Run’s 5K course began and ended at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, home of the Bridgeport Bluefish. The top finisher was Kevin Boughan of Sandy Hook, in a time of 16 minutes, 41 seconds. The first woman across the finish line was Maura McCabe of Bedford, NY, in 20 minutes, 25 seconds.
Several hospital staff members also had notable performances in the 5K. Ryan O’Connell, MD, vice president, Performance and Risk Management, finished first among men in his age group and sixth overall. Administrative fellow Catherine Dangremond finished first among women in her age group. Pam Scagliarini, interim senior vice president, Operations, finished fourth in her age group.
Jonathan Yuen of Katonah, NY, received the Vic Weinstein memorial trophy for best time in the 70-and-over group.
About 50 children took part in the fun run inside the ballpark, each one receiving a prize ribbon at the finish.
“That’s why the Bridgeport Hospital Home Run is so great – it’s got something for everyone,” Jakab said. “Serious runners aim to achieve their personal best, other runners and walkers can enjoy some exercise on the scenic 5K course along the waterfront in Seaside Park, and the fun run makes it an event for the whole family.”
