Yale New Haven Hospital joined community partners for the second year at the Dixwell Community Q-House to host a Men’s Health Community Walk and Expo, bringing residents together to promote preventative care, healthy lifestyles and greater awareness of men’s health issues.
The event featured free health screenings, educational resources, wellness activities, community organizations and a health panel discussion, helping connect attendees with tools and support to improve their overall well-being.
“Raising awareness about men’s health has never been more important,” said Lindsey Roehre, interim director of the Office of Health Equity and Community Impact for Yale New Haven Health (YNHHS). “Men are less likely than women to seek preventative care or talk openly about their physical and mental health, and the consequences are significant.”
The event was a collaboration among healthcare providers, community organizations and local leaders. Yale New Haven Hospital, Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, members of the New Haven Board of Alders, faith leaders, and numerous community partners came together with a shared goal; improving men’s health through education, awareness and access to resources.
“When we focus on the health of our community, we strengthen the well-being of everyone who lives here,” said New Haven Alderman Frank Douglass. “Events like this help shine a light on the importance of preventive care and encourage people to make their health a priority.”
Carlah Esdaile, director of Marketing and Communications for Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, encouraged men to prioritize their health regardless of age. “Our men are often so busy caring for their families, careers and communities that they put their own health on the back burner,” she said. “No matter your age, regular screenings and preventive care are essential because health concerns can develop quietly. Taking action early can make all the difference.”
The event underscored the importance of regular checkups, early detection and community support in helping men live healthier lives.
