Biography - Huned S. Patwa, MD

Huned Patwa, MD, is a neurologist with a special interest in treating people who have a neuromuscular disease, including myasthenia gravis, a disease characterized by muscle weakness. He serves as co-director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic, as well as chief of the Neurology Service at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.

An associate professor of neurology at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Patwa focuses his research on diseases of the peripheral nervous system, including myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it.

Dr. Patwa is nationally recognized as an investigator in a pivotal clinical trial leading to FDA approval of IVIG, or intravenous immunoglobulin (a treatment derived from blood plasma), for the treatment of chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy.

He has also been involved in evaluating the quality of care delivered to veterans with ALS, which destroys nerve cells and causes disability, and he helped develop national guidelines for care of people with ALS.
