Yale New Haven Health System

We’re getting Closer to Free – thanks to these employees

Closer to Free 2026
Every year, hundreds of Yale New Haven Health System employees participate in the Closer to Free (CTF) Ride to support Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. Meet some of these inspiring employees and consider joining them for the Sept. 19 CTF event as a rider, volunteer or supporter. All YNHHS employee riders pay a registration fee of just $50 for adults and $25 for students/youth (a 50 percent discount). Use the code EMPLOYEE26 and provide your employee ID number at registration. Register and learn more at rideclosertofree.org.

This year will be my 13th Ride! I ride because it’s a meaningful way to turn something challenging into something impactful. It allows me to honor members of my family and friends who have been affected by cancer, while also supporting the patients and survivors I work with every day.

Being part of a community that’s working toward better outcomes in cancer care, whether through research, support or survivorship, feels incredibly important. It’s also about being part of something bigger. Riding alongside colleagues from across Yale New Haven Health creates a powerful sense of camaraderie. We all come together to make a difference in the lives of patients and families. Whether it’s riding alongside people who have their own stories, the support from the community or the feeling of crossing the finish line, there’s an energy and shared purpose.

I also love what we’ve built at Greenwich Hospital with our pre-ride Spin in the Garden. It started during COVID when the main ride was canceled, and with help from our community partners has become a way for people who can’t travel to New Haven on Ride day to still be part of the experience. What began as a creative solution has become a meaningful tradition that really reflects the inclusive, community-driven spirit of Closer to Free.
