Ambulatory nursing leaders meeting focuses on best practices

Ambulatory nursing leaders
Patient services managers and assistant patient services managers for YNHHS’ Ambulatory regions gathered in September to share best practices for safe, high-quality, consistent care.

On Sept. 3, about 50 Yale New Haven Health Ambulatory nursing leaders came together for a daylong meeting focused on quality, safety and consistent nursing practice in ambulatory care.

The group comprised nursing professionals who previously worked in YNHHS’ hospital clinics, service lines, Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) and Yale Medicine and are now part of the new enterprise ambulatory operating structure.

The patient services managers and assistant patient services managers oversee nursing at sites throughout YNHHS’ ambulatory regions. The gathering highlighted the similarities and differences among the sites, including the regulations and protocols they follow.

Provider-based locations licensed under YNHHS hospitals, for example, are subject to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Joint Commission requirements. Physician practices with Yale Medicine and NEMG follow less-stringent and regulated standards.

The September meeting helped educate nursing leaders about these differences and other requirements that apply to their practice sites. It also focused on medication management, infection prevention and other quality and safety topics, along with population health and nursing professional practice standards.

“The goal of the meeting was to raise awareness and ensure the best nursing practices for ambulatory care,” said Kathleen O’Leary, RN, vice president of Ambulatory Nursing and Home-Based Services. “All of our patients deserve the same care signature quality experience regardless of applicable regulations.”

“With the new enterprise operating model, we now have a dedicated team of highly skilled nursing leaders focused on the highest quality and standard nursing practice across all ambulatory locations,” said Jorge Rodriguez, YNHHS executive vice president and chief ambulatory officer.
