YNHH honors Martin Luther King with grants to local schools

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Yale New Haven Hospital has awarded $3,000 in educational grants to two New Haven elementary schools. The annual grants are intended to fund projects that area students will undertake to learn about and share the legacy of Dr. King.

The Wexler-Grant School received $2,000 for their 2011 MLK Conference entitled "Our Dream for our World: Diversity, Respect, Environmental Awareness, Activism and Mortality." The day-long event will be held on MLK day - January 17 - and feature workshops for students and their families.

A $1,000 grant was awarded to the John C. Daniels Magnet School of International Communication for their "Alive & Well in New Haven" project where students will use technology to collect and document an oral history of local community leaders inspired by Dr. King's vision.

"The community has reacted positively to how we honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King," said Patricia Worthy, RN, manager, Workforce Diversity, YNHH. "Our employees - many of whom live in New Haven - are proud of our efforts to invest in the schools and students who are carrying on Dr. King's work and philosophy."
