Yale New Haven Hospital construction to bring more than $1 billion of positive economic impact to the state of Connecticut

New Haven, CT (Oct. 7, 2019) – Yale New Haven Hospital today announced the results of a study demonstrating the significant positive economic impact that its new state-of-the-art Neuroscience Center will have in the region. According to the CT Economic Resource Center (CERC), construction of the new Neuroscience Center on YNHH’s Saint Raphael Campus, announced in April, is estimated to generate more than a $1 billion impact in the state.

“The new Neuroscience Center is clearly going to be a win-win situation,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, CEO Yale New Haven Hospital/Yale New Haven Health. “Not only will patients in our region have access to the most advanced neurological care, but the state and its residents will benefit economically from the project and its associated impact.”

The $838 million project, which is expected to open in 2024, will include two new patient facilities on the Saint Raphael campus that will focus on innovative collaboration between Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. The new 505,000 square-foot project will have 204 inpatient beds for patients seeking innovative care from movement disorders to neuro-regeneration. The project also includes a significant expansion of the Emergency Department on the SRC Campus.

“Partnering with Yale New Haven Hospital on this exciting project is a no-brainer for Connecticut,” said Governor Ned Lamont. “This state of the art facility is yet another example that YNHH and New Haven are leaders in medicine and research. I know the Neuroscience Center on the Saint Raphael Campus will yield incredible results not only for future patients, but for the greater New Haven community and for the state as a whole.”

The economic activity from the construction, demolition and renovation projects associated with the Neuroscience Project will support over 6,400 jobs in the state as the increase in production across the state and household spending ripples through Connecticut’s economy. Other industries will also be impacted thanks to the new jobs: retail trade, rental, restaurants and entertainment, technical and household services and more.

“The investment this project represents: long-term prosperity, long-term relationships, jobs, stability and yes, dollars and cents; sends the strong signal that Yale New Haven Health and the City of New Haven will continue walking side by side long into the future,” Mayor Toni N. Harp said. “This proposed Neurology Center will underscore Yale New Haven Health’s position as a global leader in 21st century healthcare services – and cement New Haven’s place as the home and destination for these services.”

The Neuroscience Center will be built within the existing footprint of the hospital campus, bordered by Sherman Avenue and George Street. It will shift the main entrance of the hospital from Chapel Street to George Street. An existing parking garage on Orchard Street will be extended to George Street to accommodate patients and a new 200-space underground garage will support the facility.
