Michael G. Caty, MD, named chief of pediatric surgery at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital

3/15/12 —Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) and Yale School of Medicine (YSM) announce the appointment of Michael G. Caty, MD, as pediatric surgeon-in-chief. Dr. Caty joins YNHCH from Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, where he was surgeon-in-chief, director of pediatric surgical services, and professor of surgery and pediatrics, University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

“Dr. Caty is a skilled surgeon, researcher and academician who brings more than two decades of experience to his role as our new pediatric surgeon-in-chief,” said Robert Udelsman, MD, surgeon-in-chief at Yale New Haven Hospital and chair of the department of surgery at YSM.

Dr. Caty is board certified in pediatric and general surgery. His clinical interests include neonatal surgery, thoracic surgery, intestinal motility disorders, pediatric renal transplantation, pediatric surgical oncology, pediatric laparoscopy and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

Dr. Caty completed his undergraduate education at Boston College and obtained his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts. His general surgery training was done at the University of Michigan where he served as administrative chief resident. During his general surgery residency he did a research fellowship investigating intestinal injury during ischemia and reperfusion. His pediatric surgery residency was done at Children's Hospital of Boston and Harvard Medical School where he served as chief resident.

His research interests are concentrated on the pathophysiology of intestinal ischemia and reperfusion.

Dr. Caty is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Pediatric Surgical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Shock Society, Association for Academic Surgery and many others. He joined the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo in 1993.
