BRIDGEPORT, CT (June 10, 2022) – The Heart and Vascular Center at Bridgeport Hospital recently marked its 400th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure since its first in 2016. Yale New Haven Health’s Heart and Vascular Center has performed more than 2,100 total procedures at Bridgeport and Yale New Haven hospitals combined.

“Reaching the 400th TAVR milestone at Bridgeport Hospital is a testament to the experience and skill of our structural heart team,” said Edward Tuohy, MD, one of the cardiologists who performs TAVRs at the hospital. “We continue at the forefront of advanced cardiovascular care thanks to our expert providers and state-of-the-art technology which enhances safety and “Yale New Haven Health System has now performed more than 2,100 TAVR procedures across the Yale New Haven and Bridgeport Hospital campuses."

"When we started the TAVR program at Bridgeport Hospital, our aim was to bring advanced, tertiary level care to the Bridgeport area to make it more accessible to our patients with severe aortic stenosis,” added cardiologist Victor Mejia, MD. “To do so meant bringing together a multidisciplinary team focused on excellence and safety. After achieving the 400th trans-catheter valve replacement performed at Bridgeport Hospital, I feel we are succeeding in reaching our goals."

“The Structural Heart Program is a recognized leader in TAVR across New England, providing patient-centered care with nationally recognized expert physicians at the forefront of clinical care and research,” said John Forrest, MD, Director of the Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Programs for Yale New Haven Health.

TAVR is a minimally invasive treatment, approved by the FDA for low-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis, a type of heart valve disease. TAVR replaces the valve without open-heart surgery, which means less time in the hospital and a faster recovery. This means less time in the hospital and a faster recovery.

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is a non-profit 501-bed acute care hospital with two campuses (plus 42 beds licensed to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital). Its Bridgeport and Milford Campuses serve patients from across the region. The hospital admits more than 23,000 patients and provides nearly 350,000 outpatient treatments annually.
