33rd annual Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Classic set for Sept. 12 in Fairfield; proceeds to support care for cancer patients

Tuesday, August 13, 2013

The 33rd annual Coca-Cola Kaulbach Memorial Golf Classic will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. Proceeds will support patient care and support services provided by Bridgeport Hospital’s Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute. For information, call the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation at 203.384.3522 or visit http://foundation.bridgeporthospital.org.

“It’s a great day of golf, on a renowned golf course, all to support cancer patients from throughout the area and their families—no matter how many birdies or bogeys you end up with,” says Steve Jakab, President of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation, which organizes the event with the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Committee.

Already one of the longest-running charity golf tournaments in Connecticut, the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Classic is the legacy of its founder, Ernie Kaulbach, an avid golfer, businessman and philanthropist, who died of cancer in 1996.

Since 2000, the Classic has raised more than $1 million to support cancer services at Bridgeport Hospital. Recently, proceeds have funded replacement of all Cancer Institute inpatient beds with state-of-the-art models, the Celebrate Life and Moving Forward cancer survivor events, expansion of genetic counseling services, the Oncology Chaplaincy Program and nursing education.

The Classic begins with registration and a gourmet brunch at 9:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:15 p.m. Cocktail hour begins at 4:30 p.m., with dinner and an awards ceremony immediately following. The ceremony will include a raffle and a live auction.

Play is limited to 120 golfers. The $500 entry fee ($170 of which is tax deductible) includes all meals, cocktails, greens fees, golf cart, full locker facilities, par three prizes for amateurs and special commemorative gifts.

The Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Committee is chaired by Ed Santa of Shelton. Joining him on the committee are Christina Bodine of Fairfield; Ted D’Eramo and Mike Marcinek of Seymour; former Fairfield resident Austin Felis, who now resides in Manchester, VT; Dave Galla, Joe Haley and Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute Co-Medical Director Scott Thornton, MD, all of Trumbull; Marc Campano of Stratford, Brian Curry of East Hartford and Brad Worthington of Easton. Also on the committee is Paul Fitzgerald, representing title sponsor Coca-Cola Refreshments.

The Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital provides care to over 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year, more than any other hospital in Fairfield County. The hospital is a member of the Yale New Haven Cancer Network, an alliance of hospitals across Connecticut that provides access to the latest breakthroughs and delivers an unparalleled level of expertise in cancer, prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Bridgeport Hospital continues to expand its services for cancer patients at the hospital’s main campus in Bridgeport and elsewhere in the community. During the past year, the hospital opened its new Trumbull Radiation Oncology Center at 5520 Park Avenue. The Center will join other planned and existing services at the same site to form a comprehensive outpatient satellite cancer center.

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is a non-profit 501-bed acute care hospital with two campuses (plus 42 beds licensed to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital). Its Bridgeport and Milford Campuses serve patients from across the region. The hospital admits more than 23,000 patients and provides nearly 350,000 outpatient treatments annually. The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn center in the state and one of only 64 verified burn centers in the United States. Bridgeport Hospital is committed to providing safe, compassionate and cost efficient care to its patients and the community. www.bridgeporthospital.org
