Great Catch winners help YNHH become a high reliability organization

Amber Myers, Brittany Prior

Congratulations to these Great Catch winners for modeling HRO safety behaviors and taking action to improve patient safety.

Inpatient

Amber Myers, surgical technologist, South Pavilion Operating Room, was recognized for practicing and accepting a questioning attitude during a surgical procedure. She noticed that the patient’s throat packing had not been removed and alerted the surgical team. The team accepted her questioning attitude, halted the procedure and removed the packing.

Outpatient

Brittany Prior, physical therapist, Pediatric Specialty Center, One Long Wharf, was recognized for practicing a questioning attitude, attention to detail and proper use of SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation). When a patient mentioned mood and energy changes, Brittany halted treatment and urged him to contact his primary care physician. Later that evening the patient called her and she again encouraged him to visit the doctor. The patient was later found to have dangerously low hemoglobin levels that put him at risk for a heart attack or stroke and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
