Yale New Haven Hospital has taken a big step forward in its quest for Magnet® re-designation, with news that the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is planning a five-day site visit for later this summer.

Four Magnet appraisers will visit the hospital, including the York Street and Saint Raphael campuses, Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale New Haven Children's Hospital's Bridgeport Campus and ambulatory settings. The purpose of the visit is to verify, amplify and clarify information in the re-designation document YNHH submitted Feb. 1.

"Many nurses helped produce the re-designation document, and we should all be proud to have reached this stage in the Magnet process," said Sue Fitzsimons, RN, PhD, senior vice president, Patient Services. "The site visit will provide an opportunity for us to show how our emphasis on exceptional nursing practice helps us achieve excellent patient outcomes."

The appraisers will focus on nursing outcomes, but appraisers also will talk to other staff members involved in patient care. They'll be looking for evidence of collaboration and teamwork, nursing leadership at all levels, evidence-based practice and research, nurse decision-making, ethical practice and innovations. Appraisers will also explore how the hospital supports nurses' professional development and YNHH's shared governance structure, which gives nurses a voice in policies and practice.

To help prepare for the visit, Nursing is providing Magnet re-designation readiness materials, Magnet Champions throughout the hospital are presenting during department meetings and the YNHH Magnet team is conducting special rounds to review with staff components of the Nursing Professional Practice Boards on display in each area.
