Dear Friends,
Thank you! Your generosity made a major difference in the lives of many Bridgeport Hospital patients and
their families during the past year. Your support helped us improve the quality and safety of care and provide a
positive experience during more than 18,000 patient admissions, 270,000 outpatient visits and 84,000 Emergency
Department visits. Some of our recent service enhancements include:
- Installation of the newest-generation da Vinci Xi robotic surgery system, which brings unprecedented
safety and precision to a variety of minimally invasive surgical procedures
- Innovative advances in cardiac care such as LINQ, the world’s smallest implantable heart monitor, and
the Lariat procedure, which dramatically reduces stroke risk in many patients with atrial fibrillation
- A new patient reception and education center in the Joel E. Smilow Heart Institute
- An expanded MedEase ambulatory medicine unit and Gyn-Oncology and Urogynecology specialty
clinics
- Establishment of a Smilow Care Center at our outpatient campus in Trumbull, which makes the worldclass
specialty care of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven more accessible to Fairfield County
residents
- Groundbreaking for a new 120,000-square-foot medical office building at the Trumbull campus, to open
in early 2016, that will house expanded cancer services, including a healing garden made possible by the
Norma F. Pfriem Foundation, ambulatory surgery and other services
- Expanded cardiac surgery, hepatology, surgical oncology and vascular surgery services made possible by
our relationship with Yale School of Medicine
- Together with our partners in Yale New Haven Health System, North Shore-LIJ Health and Med-Trans,
the launch of SkyHealth, a new air ambulance service to facilitate patient transfers between hospitals
Much of this activity results from your ongoing philanthropic support of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation.
Without this support, success stories such as those on the following pages could not be told. Stories such as:
- Shaun Amberg and Masha Watson, whose ongoing commitment to the Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers
makes it possible for patients to regain full, active lives through the centers’ services
- Richard Boas, MD, who established the Fay Fund to help less fortunate patients with non-medical needs
- Tom and Patti Keegan, whose dedication to the Norma Pfriem Breast Center enables so many women to
complete the journey to breast cancer recovery
- John and Karen Paloian, whose Gary S. Porges Endowment helps needy patients with heart problems
afford critical tests
On behalf of everyone at Bridgeport Hospital, thank you again for helping us accomplish our mission of
providing the safest, most patient- and family-centered care. With you as partners, we look forward to achieving
even more in the days and years ahead.
