Dr. Tain-Yen (T-Y) Hsia is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine. Prior to his appointment at Yale, Dr. Hsia was a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, United Kingdom, and Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgeon at University College London for nearly 9 years.  Dr. Hsia immigrated from Taiwan, Republic of China to the United States at 13 years of age.  He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he obtained both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering with special interest in Fluid Dynamics and Heat/Mass Transfer. Subsequently he studied medicine at Stanford University.  Following his MD degree, he completed training in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  During this time, he completed a Research Fellowship funded by the National Science Foundation (US) with Prof. Marc de Leval at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in the application of computational modeling in congenital heart diseases.  Dr. Hsia completed his training in pediatric cardiac surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with Dr. Tom Spray, and  took up the post of Attending Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.  In addition to a busy clinical practice in all aspects of pediatric and congenital heart surgery, Dr. Hsia continues an active and productive international collaboration in the application of engineering and computational methods in the improvement and understanding of surgical treatment of congenital heart defects.
