Price Estimate FAQ

What is usually included in an estimate?

Estimates are based on the typical cost of the service you’ve requested. When completing an estimate using our online Price Estimator tool, this includes both hospital and Yale Medicine physician fees. The estimate will also factor in your insurance benefits to calculate your estimated out-of-pocket cost.

What is a co-pay?

A co-payment is a fixed amount (for example: $25) you pay for a covered healthcare service, usually when you get the service. The amount can vary by the type of covered service.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the amount you are expected to pay for covered healthcare services before your health plan begins to pay. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, your plan won't pay anything until you reach $1,000 of covered healthcare services subject to the deductible. To find out if you have a deductible, please contact your insurance company.

What is co-insurance?

A co-insurance is your percentage share of the costs of a covered healthcare service. This (for example: 20%) is based on the allowed amount for service. You pay coinsurance plus any deductibles you owe. For example, if the health plan's allowed amount for an office visit is $100 and you've met your deductible, your coinsurance payment of 20% would be $20. The health insurance or plan pays the rest of the allowed amount.

How do I create an estimate?

Visit our Price Estimator tool to begin and follow the steps below to create your personalized price estimate.

  1. Select the category that best fits your service or search for your service in the search box.
    You can search using:
    • A keyword
    • CPT code
  2. Select your insurance and enter your insurance information, or click “Skip this Step” if you do not have insurance.
  3. Choose the location where you plan to receive your care.

After completing these three easy steps, your estimate will calculate and present the cost based on the service and insurance you entered. Along with a reference number, you also have the option to print or email your estimate for your records.

Hospital Fees: 888-542-2925
Yale Medicine Physician Fees: 203-737-7692

Why might my estimate change?

Your actual charges may differ from the estimate for many reasons, including the seriousness of your medical condition and any unforeseen complications or if additional tests or procedures are performed. If you have insurance, your benefits will ultimately determine the amount you owe, including deductibles, co-pay, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximums.
