Yale New Haven Children's Hospital specialties recognized by U.S. News & World Report

6/5/2012 — Yale New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) has been ranked among the best in the nation for seven of its pediatric subspecialties in the 2012-13 Best Children's Hospitals rankings, published online by U.S. News & World Report. YNHCH ranked in diabetes and endocrinology (#3); gastroenterology (#22); neonatology (#47); nephrology (#30); orthopedics (#42); pulmonology (#20); and urology (#18).

Bogue, MD, physician-in-chief at YNHCH, and interim chair of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. "This recognition offers families of sick children a level of reassurance as well as unparalleled information about the quality of care at Yale New Haven."

This is the fifth consecutive year that Yale New Haven Children's Hospital has been included in the U.S. News & World Report national rankings of pediatric services. YNHCH's seven ranked specialties are up from five ranked specialties in 2011. YNHCH is the only children's hospital in Connecticut to receive this level of recognition.

To create the 2012-13 rankings, U.S. News polled 178 pediatric hospitals to obtain data such as survival rates, availability of key resources, such as subspecialists and nurse staffing, and the ability to prevent complications and infections. The hospital survey made up 75 percent of the rankings. A separate reputational survey in which 1,500 pediatric specialists — 150 in each specialty — were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty made up the remaining 25 percent.

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital cares for more children than any other hospital in Connecticut and serves as one of the region's major referral centers for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of high-acuity pediatric cases, including diabetes care, complex bone disorders, hematology/oncology disorders, solid organ and stem cell transplantation, and interventional cardiology. YNHCH is also a Level 1 trauma center.
