Children's Hospital recognized by U.S. News

5/17/2011 — Yale New Haven Children's Hospital  has been ranked among the best in the nation for five of its pediatric subspecialties in the 2011 edition of America's Best Children's Hospitals, published online by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital's diabetes and endocrinology service ranked number seven in the nation; YNHCH also ranked among the very best in the nation in four additional medical specialties: gastroenterology, urology, neonatology and pulmonology.

"We are honored to have our children's hospital specialties ranked among the best in the United States," said Clifford Bogue, MD, interim chair of pediatrics at YNHCH. "We are especially proud that our comprehensive pediatric thyroid program and overall diabetes and endocrinology programs are in elite company. The depth and breadth of our expertise across all the pediatric specialties is significant and becoming more impressive each year."

This is the third consecutive year YNHCH's diabetes and endocrinology service has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report.

"Our total focus is providing the best family-centered care to each and every patient at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital," said Cynthia Sparer, executive director of YNHCH and vice president for women's and children's services at Yale New Haven Hospital. "The recognition by U.S. News & World Report is a testament to the dedication of the physicians, nurses and staff and the passion and commitment they convey while working to advance research and treatment of childhood illnesses at Yale New Haven Children's."

Now in its fifth year, America's Best Children's Hospitals pulls together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey, completed by the majority of the 177 hospitals asked to participate for the 2011-12 rankings. The survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability, and many more pieces of critical information difficult or impossible for those in charge of a child's care to find on their own. The data from the survey is combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging problems.

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, affiliated with the highly-ranked Yale School of Medicine, opened in 1993 as Connecticut's first comprehensive children's hospital. As one of the region's major referral centers for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of high-acuity pediatric cases, including diabetes care, complex bone disorders and thyroid disease, transplantation and interventional cardiology, YNHCH cares for more children than any other hospital in Connecticut.

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, with 201 of Yale New Haven's 966 beds, offers Connecticut's largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
