Cardiologists recognize Middle School for life-saving efforts

Cardiologists from Yale New Haven Children's Hospital today presented a proclamation honoring the staff at Bedford Middle School for their life-saving efforts for 11-year old Adam Greenlee.

On Jan. 14, 2014, Bedford Middle School sixth grader Adam Greelee fell ill and was unresponsive while participating in his first period gym class. The two school nurses quickly responded and discovered Adam's condition had worsened and was in full cardiac arrest. As result of on-going training, an emergency 911 call was placed, CPR was initiated and the school principal retrieved the EAD (defibrillator) which advised, based on the severity of Adam's condition, that shock be applied immediately. Within minutes, the staff and a patrolling Westport police officer that was nearby and responded to the 911 call, utilized the EAD and shocked Adam's heart back into rhythm. He regained consciousness and was stable. He was transferred to YNHCH where he was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, where cardiac surgeons surgically implanted a defibrillator/pacemaker in his chest. Within three weeks, Adam was back in school.
