Message from Marna P. Borgstrom to Yale New Haven Health Regarding COVID-19
These are extraordinary times and as we face the challenge of the Coronavirus together, we recognize the situation continues to evolve quickly. With that in mind, I wanted to share a number of very important updates with you.
March 14, 2020
We have now confirmed that several patients across our Health System have tested positive for COVID-19. This is not unexpected as the CDC and public health officials made it clear that community transmission is occurring in the state of CT. However, it does underscore the nature of this virus which requires ongoing diligence and monitoring.
With that in mind, and in the spirit of full transparency, Yale New Haven Health has reported that its chief nursing executive, Beth Beckman, has now tested positive and has self-isolated at home. Beth is doing well and remains engaged in our daily operations.
Additionally, chief clinical officer, Thomas Balcezak, MD, has been exposed to COVID-19. While he has tested negative and has no symptoms, he has self-quarantined at home for the next 14 days as a result of his wife’s positive test. Like Beth, he remains engaged in our daily operations while working at home.
As always, our top priority remains the safety of patients, visitors and everyone that works throughout the Yale New Haven Health System. Anyone that has come into direct contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 should self-monitor and, should symptoms arise, contact their primary care physician directly.
As a reminder, staff protocols are located on the intranet and include washing your hands, monitoring yourself for any respiratory issues or fevers of 100 degrees or higher. Please also remember that if you develop a fever or respiratory symptoms, do not report to work – stay home and call your manager.
Should you have any questions related to COVID-19 and your responsibilities, please speak with your manager or call the Health System’s COVID-19 call center at 203-688-1700 or 833-ASK-YNHH.
Thank you for your commitment to our patients and your colleagues. We will continue to provide you updates through emails, the intranet and virtual meetings in the days and weeks ahead.
