Strep and Sore Throat

Urgent Care for Strep & Sore Throats in Connecticut and New York

Why does your throat hurt when you swallow?

The skilled team at Yale New Haven Health Urgent Care can determine precisely what is causing your sore throat. Our physician-founded practice has been in business since 2008—always supplying patients with professional, fast, and friendly treatment—and we’re pleased to operate urgent care centers throughout Connecticut and New York.

What Is Strep Throat?

In many cases, throat pain is caused by a contagious bacterial infection known as “strep throat.” In addition to a sore throat, which can make it painful to swallow, strep throat can cause the following symptoms:

  • Small red spots on the back of the roof of the mouth
  • Swollen red tonsils (sometimes including patches or streaks of white pus)
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rash
  • Lymph node swelling and tenderness

Because strep throat results from a bacterial infection, it’s often treated using antibiotics. Keep in mind, however, that if your sore throat was caused by a virus or something else (for example, allergies, muscle strain, or an irritant), then antibiotics won’t be effective.

Common Sore Throat Remedies

The experienced providers at Yale New Haven Health Urgent Care can recommend a course of treatment based on whether your sore throat is caused by a virus or bacterial infection. But in the meantime, here are some tips for how to help a sore throat at home:

  • Take an over-the-counter pain medication
  • Gargle with warm salt water
  • Keep your throat moist by drinking plenty of fluids and using a humidifier
  • Eat foods that are easy to swallow (e.g., soup, mashed potatoes, and frozen yogurt) and avoid acidic and spicy foods
  • Suck on a lozenge

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the attention you gave me last week.

My son was started on antibiotics and ear drops. Within 24 hours he began to feel better. The poor kid had been going to school in tears because he was afraid of missing any more days, but feeling (and looking) just awful! He's not been able to even think about lacrosse practice, but thanks to starting him on antibiotics, he was thrilled to return to practice today.
