YNHHS News ReleasesReleased Oct. 28, 2007 Health System receives grant to improve hospital emergency preparedness effortsNEW HAVEN — Yale New Haven Health System’s Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response (YNH-CEPDR) is among four U.S. health care organizations nationwide that have been awarded nearly $1 million dollars in funding from the VHA Health Foundation to develop new approaches to improve hospital emergency preparedness efforts. As a grant recipient, Yale New Haven Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response is charged with developing comprehensive emergency management training courses to be delivered to 10 hospital beta sites nationally. YNH-CEPDR will tailor courses to unique local needs and encourage collaboration among institutions in different cities and states. “Hospitals provide a multi-faceted, dynamic response to catastrophes, becoming an umbrella of disaster relief efforts,” said Christopher Cannon, M.S.N., M.P.H., fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives and the director of the Yale New Haven Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response. “Promoting effective models of emergency preparedness is crucial to helping hospitals better meet the needs of America’s communities.” The VHA Health Foundation, based in Irving, Texas, is a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting innovative approaches to health care delivery, including the creation of new tools and resources that assist hospitals in better preparing for and responding to all types of disasters. The other three hospitals sharing the grant are Massachusetts General, New York Presbyterian and Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, NC.
